Just so you know..... Christophe's champagne can be found on the wine list at Noma, named once again this year as the world's number one restaurant. (San Pellegrino Awards)
13 miles west of Epernay, in the tiny hamlet of Le-Mesnil-le-Huttier is the home of Christophe Mignon. Christophe farms some 6.3 hectares of vines, planted 90 per cent to Pinot Meunier, spread among thirty parcels between Le Breuil and Festigny in the Marne Valle
He and his wife Laurence are the fifth generation of the Prudhomme family, who are descendants from a long line of wine growers, the Lannes and the Moutardiers.
This area, just south of the river Marne and alongside its tributary, the Flagot, is known principally for the quality of the wine made from the Pinot Meunier grape variety, which is particularly well suited to the clay and chalk soils to be found here. In fact, many local growers sell their grapes through the co-operative to one of the most prestigious names in Champagne.Christophe uses his grapes to make his own champagne, cultivating his vines with what he describes as ‘alternative’ methods, using biodynamic preparations and working in chime with the lunar calendar, but he refuses to comply with the diktats of certification, instead ploughing his own furrow towards respect for nature, sustainability and healthy, mature harvests.
The result of this dedication is fabulous champagne, whose quality acts as the sales and marketing department of the setup, whilst leaving him time to do what he does best, taking care of his vines.
We have known of Christophe since the early nineties when we visited him as part of an ‘off-the-beaten-track’ tour of quality producers in the Champagne region.
We offer here a selection of Christophe's champagne for you to buy online and have delivered direct to your door.
You may be interested to know that the Mignons also have accommodation to rent in the heart of the vineyard area. This is an extraordinary place in which to spend a few days. Within half an hour's drive of Epernay and the Cote de Blancs, or three quarters of an hour from the Montagne de Reims, where there is so much to see and do, and the warmth of the welcome from Christophe and his wife Laurence make this a must do for the avid champagne lover.
