Emmanuel Pithois has always been one of our favourite winemakers.
He really should have been English. His sense of humour is a much needed tonic when arriving in Champagne after an early morning start and a long drive down the A26 autoroute towards Reims.
His wife Catherine is always on hand with a welcoming coffee or a glass of something bubbly and we usually enjoy an interesting few minutes banter in pidgin versions of our respective languages before getting on with business.
Emmanuel has 5 hectares of vines in Verzenay, on the north eastern edge of the Montagne de Reims, where he produces between 30,000 and 35,000 bottles of champagne each year. Nothing experimental or boundary pushing here, Emmanuel’s principal aim is to give people enjoyment and he’s happy when people tell him that he’s ‘their’ vigneron.
Apart from running her side of the champagne business, Catherine has realized her dream by being able to play hostess to visitors from all over the world in her magnificent guest house, where the most intricate attention to detail ensures that you take away a very special memory of the Champagne region. Apart from being pampered from start to finish, you’ll be able to see the renovated cellars, where instruments of production, including the traditional press, are on display to give an insight into how champagne was made in times gone by.
Down here you’ll also see the oak barrels which are used today to add a certain something to the aroma of Emmanuel’s vintage wines while at the same time softening their acidity. His light touch and expertise in the cellar, however, mean that you would be hard pressed to notice any hint of oak in the wine.
Henry George Wines are delighted to bring you a selection of Pinot Noir based champagnes from the Pithois family vineyards : Cuvée Vieilles Vignes, Prestige Brut Réserve and Cuvée Tradition.
