Pascal Doquet Organic Champagne

Pascal and Laure Doquet  are based in  Vertus, at the southern tip of the Côte des Blancs, with parcels located in Grand Cru Le Mesnil sur Oger.

After receiving organic certification since the 2007 harvest, Pascal Doquet is now concentrating on marketing his new Pascal Doquet brand in the UK. It already sells in eleven other countries worldwide.

In 2008 Pascal's harvest was markedly reduced because of problems with mildew. He averaged only around 9500 kg per hectare while others were averaging 15000kg. Organic regulations allow only the use of Copper Sulphate to to combat mildew, and sometimes, especially in the early days of conversion to organic viticulture, it is just not enough.

In 1996 Emannuel Fourny, another Vertus wine maker, began to convert his vines to organic practices, but in the wet summer of 1997 he lost more than half his crop to mildew. In 1998 he decided that he could no longer afford to  pusue a strictly organic regime, so he opted for a more moderate set of practices, known as ' lutte raisonnée', working as organically as possible, whilst reserving the right to use a minimum of synthetic treatments when the weather threatens to destroy the harvest.

This is a measure of the difficulty involved in being truly 'organic' in such a northerly area, where just to attempt organic viticulture demonstrates a tremendous dedication to one's art.

Pascal's reward is critical acclaim throughout the world now, and we're delighted to be able to represent him here in the United Kingdom
